Mixed Age Classes"The Joy of Family Music®"

(Reprinted in part from the Chautauqua Region Word, April 2009)

...Music Together is more than a music and movement class: it’s a “musical experience.”  Music Together pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum in 1987.

For 45-minutes, once a week, children are absorbed in a musically rich atmosphere where they can play along and explore movement, gestures, finger play, their voices, and percussion instruments – or just listen.

For parents, the pressure’s off.  These kids are free to learn at their own pace, in their own style.  It’s fun with a hidden agenda: providing kids with an opportunity to experience and expand their musical potential. Even more than that, the program provides kids and parents with a wonderful way to bond.

There’s no pressure on parents to be musically inclined, either.  The joy is in the making and the sharing of music... .  “The big, intense, excited grin on Isabella's face when I say, ‘let's get ready for class,’ is just the most amazing, rewarding thing right now,” says Danielle Reuther, mom of five whose youngest is Isabella at 23 months.  “I have noticed that I sing things to her… it seems to go smoother when Mama sings… . In so many ways this has been one of the best things we've done.  My husband laughs every time she sings at the top of her lungs, Helllllllllooooo everybody.......see you.  Even Mama belts out songs in her scary out of tune voice.  It's just fun!"

In class, some children will choose to observe quietly while others are on the move.  There is a lot of sensory, vocal, and movement exploration built into each class.  If parents don’t immediately notice results in the class, they are likely to quickly notice results outside of class.  Children can be found remembering and singing the songs after class in the car or in the bath, and parents can tangibly observe their child’s (and even infant’s) improved rhythmic and tonal skills – appearing to have learned these things almost magically. ...

There are non-musical benefits as well. ...Parents also find the songs highly adaptable in their daily routines, making routine tasks like brushing teeth and driving around the town more interactive and appealing for young children.

Family MusicThe song collections include a wide variety of familiar and new material, all with an eclectic feel.  “The world is changing fast,” says Yellow House Music teacher Karen Suber, “…and children’s music has to keep up with the changes to stay appealing.”  Well-loved children’s favorites, such as “Pop! Goes the Weasel” and “Eensy Weensy Spider,” familiar rhymes, and folksy tunes are cleverly arranged and interwoven into the CDs that parents receive each semester, filled with original sing-alongs, instrumentals, and rhythmic chants, primarily composed by Music Together co-founders Kenneth K. Guilmartin and Lili M. Levinowitz, Ph.D.

The philosophy of Music Together, as described by the co-founders, is that “all children are musical.”  Mr. Guilmartin believes that an environment of informal music activities is essential to all children, not just those who seem to be particularly “musical.” Because so much of our music today is absorbed passively through recordings rather than by participation, he observes that many children are deprived of the opportunity to learn basic music skills the way they learn everything else in life: from their primary caregivers.   By participating together with parents, regardless of a parent’s skill level, children are given a chance to experience their own musical potential.

Music Together is a tri-semester program, offered in the Spring, Fall, and Winter.  With nine full song collections, the program keeps the music fresh and exciting for a solid three years before ever revisiting a song. Summer sessions, which are 6-weeks long, are offered using family favorites comprised from the regular semester song collections.
